How much does new Carhartt duck shrink?
Firm duck can lose two to three percent in length and a little less in width with hot washing and tumble drying — around an inch on a 32-inch inseam and half an inch to an inch on a waist. Sandstone duck is pre-washed and shrinks less. Cold washing and air drying keep it closer to the original size.
Why do vintage sizes run small?
Because that shrinkage has already happened, often many times over decades. A vintage pant tagged 34 waist very commonly measures 32 to 33, and a tagged large jacket may measure like a medium. This is the single biggest reason to buy by flat measurements, not by the tag.
Will a vintage piece shrink further?
Very little. After years of washing the cotton has done most of what it will do. A hot wash and tumble dry might still take a fraction, so we recommend cold water and hanging to dry, which also protects the fade.
Do linings shrink differently?
Yes — blanket linings are wool-blend and can shrink or felt with heat, and quilted flannel can pull. That is why lined jackets should never go in a hot wash or dryer: the lining can shrink against the shell and distort the jacket.
Can I shrink a piece to fit on purpose?
Slightly, on an unlined, unworn piece, with a hot wash. On vintage it rarely moves enough to matter and risks stiffening and uneven fade. Tailoring is the reliable route — which is what reworking is.
How do you account for shrinkage in your listings?
We list the tagged size and send flat measurements of the exact piece on request. Reworked pieces are measured after the work is done, so the numbers you get are the numbers you receive.
