What does reworked clothing mean?
Reworked clothing is a garment that has been taken apart and remade by hand into something new. The fabric, hardware and usually the labels are original; the cut, proportions and construction are new. A reworked Carhartt jacket starts life as a worn vintage Carhartt jacket, then gets cropped, re-panelled or rebuilt so it fits and reads like a contemporary piece while keeping the fade, weight and character of the original.
How is reworked different from vintage?
Vintage is sold as found — cleaned, maybe repaired, but in its original cut. Reworked has been deliberately changed. That is the whole point: a 1990s Detroit jacket in its original boxy, long cut fits a certain way, while the same jacket cropped two inches with the hem re-set fits the way people actually want to wear it now. You get the authentic fabric and age without the dated fit.
Is reworked the same as upcycled?
Upcycled is the broader term for making something of higher value from discarded material. Reworked is a specific kind of upcycling applied to garments. Both avoid new fabric, but reworked clothing keeps the identity of the source garment visible — it is still recognisably a Carhartt jacket — whereas upcycling can turn a tent into a tote bag.
Why rework rather than sell vintage as it is?
Two reasons. First, a lot of good vintage canvas lives in garments with a problem — a torn lining, a blown-out elbow, a cut that has gone out of fashion. Reworking rescues the fabric. Second, fit. Original workwear proportions were designed for layering over sweaters on a job site, and most buyers today want the fabric and the fade without the extra length and sleeve.
What should I check when buying reworked clothing?
Ask what the source garment was and whether the labels are original. Look at the seam quality — reworked seams should be as dense and straight as the originals, and a rebuilt hem should sit flat. Check that the fade is continuous across panels or deliberately contrasted, not accidentally mismatched. And ask for flat measurements, because a reworked piece no longer matches its tagged size.
Is reworked clothing more sustainable?
It uses no new fabric, which is where most of a garment's environmental cost sits, and it extends the life of material that was heading for landfill or the rag trade. It is not zero-impact — there is labour, thread and shipping — but a reworked jacket from a 1990s source carries a fraction of the footprint of a new one.
How is a Carhartt Rework piece made?
Every piece starts as an authentic vintage Carhartt garment sourced at origin in Pakistan. We grade the fabric, decide the cut, take the garment apart along its seams, re-cut panels and rebuild it by hand with the original Carhartt labels and hardware retained. Each piece is photographed and filmed before listing, and once it sells it is gone — one of one.
Every piece we sell is reworked by these standards
Everything written here comes from grading and reworking Carhartt every day. Browse what's in now, or message us and we'll send photos and measurements of anything.
