How do I tell how old my Carhartt is?
Start with the main label. A square white label with the C-hook logo generally indicates pre-2000s production. A rectangular label with the modern wordmark indicates later production. Then check for a Union Made or Made in USA tag — both point to earlier manufacture, since Carhartt moved most production offshore through the 1990s and 2000s. Finally look at the hardware: older pieces use heavier brass zips, often branded Talon or Scovill.
What does the Union Made tag mean on Carhartt?
A Union Made tag means the garment was produced in a unionised US factory. These are generally the oldest pieces you will find in circulation and the most collected. Union Made labels largely disappear as production moved offshore, so their presence is a reliable signal of earlier manufacture.
Is Made in USA Carhartt worth more?
Yes, consistently. Made in USA pieces command a premium over offshore production of the same model and condition, because the duck canvas was heavier, the construction was slightly different, and supply is finite and shrinking. The difference is most pronounced on Detroit jackets and double knee pants.
What is the C-hook logo?
The C-hook is the older Carhartt logo where the C wraps into a hook shape. It appears on square labels and is one of the fastest visual signals that you are looking at an older piece rather than recent production.
Can I date Carhartt without a label?
If the label is gone, use the fabric and hardware. Older duck canvas is noticeably heavier and stiffer before break-in, ribbed cuffs on Active Jacs are deeper, corduroy collars on Detroits are thicker and softer, and zips are heavier brass rather than light alloy. These are less precise than a label but still narrow the era.
Does a missing label make it fake?
No. Labels are frequently cut out because they irritate the neck or wrist, especially on tees and hooded jackets. Judge authenticity by construction: stitch density, pocket shape, reinforcement at stress points and the chest patch. A missing label affects collector value, not authenticity.
