What makes a pant a Carhartt carpenter?
The pocket layout. A carpenter pant has a hammer loop on one leg, a long ruler pocket on the other, and reinforced utility pockets at the hip, all on a straight, roomy leg built to go over boots. Carhartt made them in duck canvas, washed duck and denim. Unlike the double knee, the front of the leg is single-layer, so the pant hangs lighter and drapes more.
How do carpenter pants fit?
Straight through the thigh and leg with a generous opening, sitting at the natural waist. Vintage pairs were cut for working in, so there is real room in the seat and thigh. Duck versions have shrunk in the wash by now — expect a tagged 34 to measure 32 to 33 — while denim versions behave like any heavy denim.
Duck or denim carpenter — which is better?
Different looks. Duck carpenters fade like Carhartt jackets — warm, high-contrast at the seams — and read as workwear. Denim carpenters fade like jeans and are easier to wear as everyday trousers. Duck is heavier and stiffer; denim is softer from the start. We stock both and the listing says which.
What should I check on a vintage pair?
The hammer loop, which is often torn off or re-stitched. The pocket corners and bar tacks, which take strain. The crotch seam and the inside thigh for wear-through. The hem for fraying from boots. All are repairable and a visible repair on a work pant is part of the reworked language.
How do you rework carpenter pants?
Mostly re-hemming to a cropped length, tapering the leg below the knee, and replacing blown-out pockets with panels from a second pair. We keep the hammer loop and ruler pocket because they are what make it a carpenter.
Which colours sell best?
Carhartt brown and the faded tans it becomes, then black, then the greys and olives. Denim carpenters in medium and light wash sell steadily all year. Dark navy and maroon are scarcer and attract collectors.
