The Carhartt Detroit jacket: a buyer's guide

Everything about the vintage Carhartt Detroit jacket: J01 vs J97, blanket lining, corduroy collar, how it fits, what to pay and how to spot a good one.

What is the Carhartt Detroit jacket?

The Detroit is Carhartt's short, blanket-lined work jacket: waist-length, with a corduroy collar, two front hand-warmer pockets with flaps, a zip front and a stitched-through blanket lining in the body with quilted nylon in the sleeves. It is the piece most people picture when they think of vintage Carhartt and the most collected Carhartt jacket on the resale market.

What is the difference between J01 and J97?

J01 is the Duck Detroit Jacket in firm, unwashed 12 oz duck — the stiffer, harder-wearing version that breaks in over years. J97 is the Sandstone Detroit, made from Carhartt's pre-washed sandstone duck that is softer from day one and takes on a lighter, more even fade. Both have the same cut and blanket lining; collectors tend to prize J01 for its stiffness and J97 for its comfort.

How does a Detroit jacket fit?

Short and boxy. The body ends at the hip, the shoulders drop slightly and the sleeves are generous to allow for layers. Vintage Detroits were cut for a sweater underneath, so many buyers size down one for a fitted modern look. Our cropped reworks take the hem up a further inch or two and re-set it so the proportion is cleaner.

How warm is the blanket lining?

Warmer than it looks. The wool-blend blanket body and quilted sleeves, combined with windproof duck canvas, make a Detroit a genuine three-season jacket in most climates and a layering piece in cold winters. It is not insulated to parka level — it was designed for working, not standing still.

What should I check on a vintage Detroit?

The corduroy collar wears first — look for bald patches. Check the blanket lining for holes and the sleeve quilting for tears. Zips should be solid brass, often Talon or Scovill on older pieces. Look at the hem and cuffs for fraying. None of these are deal-breakers for a rework, because we rebuild the damaged element, but they matter if you are buying as-is.

What colours did the Detroit come in?

Carhartt brown is the classic and the most common. Black, moss green and navy are the other common vintage colours; tan and stone are scarcer. Faded brown that has gone towards tan is the most sought-after look and we price it accordingly.

What does a vintage Detroit cost?

Sold as found, a clean vintage Detroit sells for well over a hundred US dollars and climbs with age, condition and colour. Our reworked Detroits are priced below that because we source at origin, and wholesale buyers get them in bundles at a flat per-piece rate.
