What does cropping actually change?
The hem moves up — typically one to three inches on a Detroit, more on a chore coat — and is re-set so the jacket ends at or above the hip. The visual effect is a shorter, boxier top that makes the leg read longer and the whole outfit read more contemporary. Everything else — fabric, collar, lining, pockets — stays.
Who suits a cropped jacket?
Most people. Shorter frames gain leg length; taller frames look proportioned rather than swamped. It works on men and women and over almost any trouser rise. It suits anyone who wears high-waisted trousers or wants the jacket to sit above a belt.
Who should keep the full length?
Anyone who wants the jacket to cover the hip for warmth, who wears low-rise trousers, or who wants the original collector's proportions. Full-length Detroits and chore coats also sit better over very long base layers.
How do I choose a crop length?
Measure a jacket you like from the base of the collar to the hem, or tell us your height and how you wear your trousers. A common target is a body length around 23 to 25 inches on a men's medium. We can cut to a requested length when you order.
Does cropping reduce the jacket's value?
It changes the market. A cropped jacket is no longer an as-found collector's piece, but it is a one-of-one rework that sells to a different and larger audience. For resellers, cropped Carhartt frequently sells faster than full-length at a similar price.
Can a cropped jacket be lengthened later?
No — the fabric is cut. That is why we photograph and measure before we cut on custom requests, and why the standard crop on our stock is moderate rather than extreme.
