What is the basic difference between Carhartt and Dickies?
Fabric and origin. Carhartt built its name on heavy cotton duck canvas — jackets and pants that are stiff, dense and slow to break in. Dickies built its name on the 874 work pant in a polyester-cotton twill that is lighter, crease-resistant and holds a sharp crease. Carhartt is Detroit; Dickies is Texas. Both are American workwear with a century of history.
How do the fabrics compare?
Carhartt duck is heavier, all-cotton and fades dramatically with wear, which is what vintage buyers love. Dickies twill is lighter, blended, and fades less — it stays flat and uniform. For jackets, Carhartt's blanket and quilted linings have no real Dickies equivalent in the vintage market.
Which fits better?
Different silhouettes. Carhartt pants sit at the natural waist and run straight and roomy with a wide leg opening. Dickies 874s sit slightly lower, run straight and have a more tailored, flat-front look. Carhartt jackets are boxy and short; Dickies jackets — the Eisenhower is the best known — are closer-fitting.
Which is more durable?
Carhartt, for abrasion and heavy wear — the duck canvas and triple stitching are built for trades. Dickies twill resists creasing and wrinkles and is easier to keep looking neat. Both last for decades, as the vintage market proves.
Which holds value better on resale?
Carhartt by a clear margin. Vintage Carhartt — especially USA-made Detroits, Active Jacs and double knees — commands significantly higher prices and sells faster. Dickies vintage is popular, particularly 874s and Eisenhower jackets, but at lower price points. For resellers, Carhartt carries better margins per piece.
Can you rework Dickies the way you rework Carhartt?
Yes, but the result is different. Carhartt duck rewards reworking because the fade and weight give a cropped or rebuilt piece real character. Dickies twill is lighter and more uniform, so a reworked Dickies piece reads cleaner and more minimal. We focus on Carhartt because the fabric does more.
