Is vintage Carhartt better quality than new?
In fabric weight and construction on the older pieces, generally yes — traditional duck was heavier and Made in USA construction was slightly more robust. But vintage also means decades of wear, so you are trading factory-fresh condition for better raw materials and character. Neither is universally better.
Is vintage Carhartt cheaper than new?
Usually, for the same model. A vintage Active Jac typically costs less than its current retail equivalent. The exception is sought-after Made in USA Detroits and heavily faded double knees, which can exceed new retail because supply is finite.
Does vintage Carhartt hold its value?
Better than almost any other workwear. authentic vintage supply only shrinks, and demand has grown steadily for a decade. A well-chosen piece bought now is unlikely to be worth less in five years, which is not true of new production.
When should I buy new instead?
If you need a specific size guaranteed, want a warranty, need it this week, or will genuinely work in it hard and do not care about character — buy new. Vintage is for people who want the fabric, the fade and the uniqueness.
Is buying vintage better for the environment?
Materially, yes. Extending the life of an existing garment avoids the water, dye and cotton inputs of new production entirely. Workwear is particularly suited to this because it was overbuilt in the first place.
What should a first-time vintage buyer get?
A K87 pocket tee or a carpenter pant — low cost, easy fit, and they show you whether you like the fabric weight before committing to a jacket.
