What is the fastest way to spot fake Carhartt?
Look at the chest patch. On genuine pieces the label is stitched down tightly on all four sides with even, dense stitching, the lettering is crisp, and the patch sits flat against the fabric. Counterfeits typically have looser stitching, slightly wrong letter spacing, and a patch that puckers or lifts at the corners.
Does fabric weight tell you anything?
A lot. Genuine Carhartt duck canvas is heavy — noticeably heavier than it looks. If a jacket or pant feels light for its size, be suspicious. Counterfeiters cut cost on fabric first because it is the single biggest input.
What about the hardware?
Genuine pieces use solid, weighty zips and rivets, often brass. Vintage examples may be branded Talon or Scovill. Counterfeit hardware feels light and hollow, the zip pull often rattles, and the finish wears off quickly in an unnatural way.
Are the pockets a giveaway?
Yes. Carhartt pocket shapes are consistent within a model — the curve of a back pocket on a double knee, the angle of a hand-warmer pocket on a Detroit. Counterfeits get the proportions subtly wrong. Comparing against a photo of a known-genuine example of the same model catches this immediately.
Can price alone tell me?
It is a strong signal. If a Detroit jacket in good condition is priced far below what the model consistently sells for, something is wrong — it is either counterfeit, badly damaged, or the listing is not what it appears. authentic vintage has a floor price set by what the market pays.
What about stitching?
Count stitches per inch. Carhartt uses dense, even stitching with no skipped stitches, and triple-stitches the main seams on work pieces. Counterfeits are looser, more irregular, and often single-stitched where the original is triple.
How do you verify the pieces you sell?
We grade every piece by hand against the chest patch, stitch density, hardware, pocket shape and fabric weight before it is listed, and we send additional photos and flat measurements of any specific piece on request before you pay.
