Carhartt double knee vs carpenter pants

People use these names interchangeably. They are different pants built for different jobs.

What is the difference between double knee and carpenter pants?

Double knee pants have a second layer of duck canvas sewn over the knee for abrasion resistance. Carpenter pants have a hammer loop on the outer thigh and a narrow ruler pocket on the leg. Some models have both features; many have only one. Check the knee for a visible stitched outline — that is the double knee tell.

Which is more durable?

Double knees, clearly, because the knee is where work pants fail first. The second canvas layer roughly doubles the life of the panel. Carpenter pants are equally well built everywhere else but have a single knee layer.

Which is more collectable?

Double knees. The fade pattern on the outer knee is the signature collectors look for, and heavily worn pairs with honest repairs sell for more than clean ones. Carpenter pants are more plentiful and therefore more affordable.

Which fits better?

Both are cut straight and roomy with a higher rise than modern pants. Carpenter pants feel slightly lighter in the leg because there is no second knee layer. If you want the heaviest, most structured drape, take the double knee.

Which should I buy first?

If you want one pair to wear constantly, take a carpenter pant — lighter, cheaper, equally durable for normal use. If you want the piece that will still be worth something in five years, take a double knee.

Do you stock both?
