The Detroit (model J001, and the unlined J97) is Carhartt's short chore jacket: heavyweight duck canvas, a distinctive corduroy collar, blanket-lined body for warmth, a zip chest pocket and hand-warmer pockets. It sits at the waist rather than the hip, which is why it layers so well and why it became the crossover piece into streetwear.

The Detroit is short, corduroy-collared and blanket-lined. A traditional chore coat is longer with a plain collar. The Active Jac is hooded with ribbed cuffs. Collectors pay most for Detroits, particularly older Made in USA examples in brown duck or black.

Pre-1990s pieces carry Union Made or Made in USA labels and a square white tag. The corduroy collar on older examples is deeper and softer. Look at the zip — vintage pieces use heavier brass hardware, often Talon or Scovill branded.

Detroits fit close to the body compared to Active Jacs and are cut short in the body. Many buyers take their usual size for a fitted look or size up one for a boxier fit. Measurements sent on request for every piece.
