What does a vintage Carhartt small measure?
Typically around 21 to 22 inches pit to pit, 24 to 25 inches long and 19 to 20 across the shoulders on a Detroit; Active Jacs run around an inch longer. These are approximate — individual pieces vary with era, shrinkage and wear, which is why we measure every piece.
Medium?
Roughly 23 to 24 inches pit to pit, 25 to 26 long, 20 to 21 shoulder, sleeve around 25 from the shoulder seam. Medium is the most common vintage size and fits a 38 to 42 chest depending on how much ease you want.
Large?
Roughly 24 to 26 inches pit to pit, 26 to 27 long, 21 to 22 shoulder. A vintage large often wears like a modern medium-to-large because of the boxy cut, and many buyers size down.
XL and above?
XL around 26 to 28 pit to pit and 27 to 28 long; 2XL around 28 to 30. Larger vintage sizes are scarcer and in demand for oversized looks and for taller wearers who want a full-length fit.
How do I convert for women?
Measure a jacket that fits and compare — the tag is unreliable across decades. As a rough guide, a women's UK 10 to 12 is often happiest in a vintage men's small for a fitted look or a medium for oversized. Cropped reworks are the easiest to wear across sizes because the length is already corrected.
How do cropped reworks change the chart?
Pit to pit, shoulder and sleeve stay as the source jacket; length drops by one to three inches to a target of around 23 to 25 inches on a medium. The listing for each reworked piece gives its own measurements.
