The best vintage Carhartt for winter

Which vintage Carhartt pieces are actually warm: blanket-lined Detroits, quilted Active Jacs, thermal-lined pants and henleys, how to layer them, and what to skip for cold weather.

What is the warmest vintage Carhartt jacket?

For wind and dry cold, a blanket-lined Detroit or chore coat over a thermal layer. For wet cold and wind at the head, a quilted Active Jac — the hood matters more than people expect. Neither is a parka; both are excellent to around freezing when layered, and workable below with a proper base layer.

How do I layer them?

Thermal henley or K126 as a base, a hoodie or heavy knit in the middle, duck jacket on top. The boxy vintage cut is designed for exactly this and sits correctly over bulk. A cropped jacket layers just as well; it only loses hip coverage.

Which pants are warmest?

Flannel-lined or blanket-lined double knees and dungarees. Unlined duck pants are windproof but not insulated; add a thermal underneath and they work in most winters.

What about accessories?

Vintage Carhartt beanies and the knit watch cap are the obvious ones. A thermal-lined hood on an Active Jac replaces a hat on many days.

What should I skip for winter?

Unlined shells, shorts, and single-layer tees as outer wear. Also anything with a damaged lining — a blanket lining with holes loses most of its warmth.

What do you recommend for cold markets?

For resellers in Scandinavia, Canada, Germany and the northern US, weight autumn bundles towards lined jackets and lined pants, with henleys and K126s as the base layer upsell. These move from September to March.
