Double knees (also called double-front, model B01 in brown duck and its many colour variants) have a second layer of duck canvas sewn over the knee for abrasion resistance. Originally built for carpenters and welders kneeling on concrete all day, they've become the most collected vintage Carhartt bottom.

On double knees the fade pattern is the product. Years of kneeling wears the outer knee layer to a lighter shade, paint marks record actual jobs, and repairs at stress points show a pair that was worth fixing. Clean deadstock double knees are worth less to most collectors than a well-faded working pair.

Double knees have the reinforced second knee layer. Carpenter pants have the hammer loop and ruler pocket but a single knee layer. Some models have both. Check the knee for a visible seam outline — that's the tell.

Vintage duck canvas shrinks with washing, so measured waist often runs under the tagged size. Always go by flat measurements rather than the tag. Message us with a pair you own and we'll match the closest fit from stock.
