How should I wash vintage Carhartt?
Cold water, inside out, gentle cycle, and hang dry. Hot water and tumble drying are what shrink duck canvas and dull the fade. If a piece is only lightly dirty, spot clean instead of running a full wash.
Can I put Carhartt in the dryer?
You can, but you should not. Heat shrinks duck canvas and accelerates colour loss. Hang drying takes longer but keeps the fit and the fade you bought. If you must use a dryer, use the lowest heat and pull it out damp.
Does fabric softener damage duck canvas?
Yes. Softener coats the fibres and breaks down the tight weave that gives duck its abrasion resistance. It also traps odour over time. Skip it entirely.
How do I get paint or oil out of vintage Carhartt?
Often you should not. On authentic vintage, paint marks are part of the value — removing them can reduce what the piece is worth. If a stain genuinely bothers you, treat it gently with a dedicated spot remover and accept that the surrounding fade may lighten.
Should I repair a tear or leave it?
Repair early. A small tear at a stress point will grow fast under tension. Bar-tacked or machine-reinforced repairs hold indefinitely and visible repairs are accepted — often valued — on vintage workwear.
How often should I wash it?
Less than you think. Duck canvas does not hold odour the way synthetics do. Airing a jacket outdoors handles most situations. Frequent washing is the fastest way to flatten a good fade.
