Buyer's guide

Carhartt Detroit vs Active Jac — which should you buy?

These are the two jackets people actually choose between. They are built for different things.

What is the difference between a Detroit and an Active Jac?

The Detroit (J001) is a short, waist-length chore jacket with a corduroy collar, blanket lining and a zip chest pocket. The Active Jac (J130 and variants) is a hooded jacket with a quilted or thermal lining and ribbed knit cuffs and hem. The Detroit is a jacket you wear out; the Active Jac is a jacket you work in.

Which is warmer?

The Active Jac, generally. The hood plus ribbed cuffs and hem seal out cold far better than the Detroit's open collar and straight hem. Blanket-lined Detroits close some of that gap but the hood is decisive in wind.

Which fits better for everyday wear?

The Detroit. It sits at the waist and has a cleaner line, so it layers under nothing and over everything. The Active Jac is boxier and bulkier — great as outerwear, awkward under anything else.

Which holds value better?

Detroits, particularly older Made in USA examples in brown duck or black. They crossed over from workwear into fashion earlier and have a wider buyer base. Active Jacs are more plentiful, which keeps prices more accessible.

Which should a reseller stock?

Both, weighted toward Active Jacs for volume and Detroits for margin. Active Jacs sell faster at lower ticket; Detroits sell slower at higher ticket. A lot split roughly 70/30 works for most shops.
