What are Carhartt flannel-lined pants?
Duck canvas work pants — double knee, carpenter or plain dungaree — with a soft flannel lining sewn through the whole leg for winter work. Carhartt also made blanket-lined and quilt-lined versions. The lining is usually a plaid or plain flannel and is visible when you turn the hem.
How warm are they?
Very, for a pant. Duck canvas blocks wind and the flannel traps air against the leg, which is why these were standard for outdoor trades in northern winters. They are too warm for mild climates, which is why they sell best into Scandinavia, Canada, northern Europe and the northern US.
How do lined pants fit?
Slightly closer than the unlined version of the same tagged size because the lining takes up room, and heavier in hand. Most buyers take their usual Carhartt size. Because the lining is sewn through, these pants hold their shape and hang very straight.
What should I check?
The lining at the knees and seat, which wears through before the shell. The hem, where the lining and shell meet. Pocket bags, which in lined pants are often flannel too and wear faster. Shell fade on lined pants is often lighter because they were worn fewer months of the year.
Can lined pants be reworked?
Yes, but the lining limits what we do. Re-hemming is straightforward with the lining trimmed to match. Tapering is possible. We do not usually crop lined pants to shorts because the lining defeats the purpose.
Who buys them?
Buyers in cold climates and collectors who want a complete Carhartt winter set — lined jacket, lined pants. In wholesale they are a strong autumn item for Scandinavian, Canadian and German stores.
