Where was vintage Carhartt made?
Until the late 1990s almost all Carhartt was made in its own factories in the United States — Kentucky and Tennessee in particular — with Union Made labels on most pieces. From the late 1990s production moved progressively to Mexico, and later to other countries. The country of origin is on the neck or care label.
Is Made in USA Carhartt better quality?
The fabric is essentially the same — Carhartt's duck has always been a heavy cotton canvas to its own specification. Where USA-made pieces differ is age: anything Made in USA is now 25-plus years old, so it has had decades to fade and break in. The quality difference people describe is usually the difference between a 1990s garment and a 2010s one, not between two factories.
Does Made in USA command a higher price?
Yes, consistently. On the resale market a Union Made or Made in USA label adds a premium to otherwise identical pieces, partly for authenticity and partly because it guarantees age. Collectors specifically search for it. Mexican-made Carhartt from the 2000s is still vintage and still sells well, just without the same premium.
How do I tell the difference quickly?
Read the label. Made in USA pieces usually carry 'Union Made in USA' with a union logo on the neck or inside label. Mexican production says 'Made in Mexico' on the care label, often with a 'Hecho en Mexico' line. Square chest patches tend to indicate older US production; rectangular patches came later.
Does it affect how a piece reworks?
No. We treat the fabric on its merits. A heavily faded Made in Mexico Detroit from 2003 is a better rework candidate than a stiff, barely worn USA piece, because the fade is what gives a reworked garment its character. We note the origin on request because buyers ask.
Should I pay extra for Made in USA?
If you are collecting, yes — it holds value and is increasingly scarce. If you are buying to wear, judge the fabric and fade in front of you and treat origin as a nice detail rather than the deciding factor.
