Why do Carhartt jackets have a corduroy collar?
Comfort and warmth. Corduroy is soft against the neck where stiff duck canvas would chafe, and it adds insulation at the one point the blanket lining does not cover. It also became the visual signature of the Detroit and chore coat — the dark collar against the brown body.
Why does the collar wear out first?
It takes constant friction from the neck and from being turned up against wind, and corduroy pile is the most fragile part of the garment. Vintage collars typically show bald patches at the fold and the points, and the colour fades from the body colour towards grey.
What does collar condition tell you about a jacket?
A lot about how it was worn. Even wear across the collar means years of normal use; bald only at the back means it was worn turned up; a pristine collar on a faded body is a sign of a replaced collar or very light wear. It is one of the first things we grade.
Can a worn collar be repaired?
Light pile loss is left alone — it is part of the character. Heavier wear is repaired by re-facing the collar with new corduroy over the original, keeping the shape and seam lines. A destroyed collar is replaced with a new one cut to the original pattern in matching wide-wale corduroy.
Does replacing the collar reduce value?
For a piece sold as-found, collectors prefer the original. For a reworked piece, a clean replaced collar is a plus — the jacket is being remade anyway, and the collar is where it will be seen and touched most. We state on each listing whether the collar is original or replaced.
What colours did Carhartt use for collars?
Brown duck jackets usually have a dark brown collar; black jackets have black; some navy and grey jackets carry a black or charcoal collar. Older examples have deeper, more pronounced wales than later production.
