The brown duck colourway

Brown duck is the colour most people picture when they think of Carhartt. It ages warm, and every crease and fold records where the fabric bent most.

Era and identification

The Detroit (J001, and unlined J97) dates to the mid-1900s and became the crossover piece into fashion. Pre-1990s examples have a deeper corduroy collar, Union Made labels and Talon or Scovill zips.

Condition — like new

Graded like new: clean throughout, structurally sound, no notable flaws. What patina there is came from light wear and washing rather than work. If you want vintage fabric weight without the marks, this is the grade to buy. Priced at $144 against an original retail of $189 — 24% below new, for fabric weight and construction current production no longer matches.

How it fits and how to wear it

Cut boxy and roomy to layer over a hoodie. Most buyers size down one from their usual jacket size for a modern fit, or keep true to size for the oversized look. Wears as outerwear over a hoodie or knit through autumn and winter. The boxy cut is the point — it was designed to layer, which is why it sits correctly over bulk rather than straining. Care

Wash cold and hang dry. Duck canvas softens with every wash but hot water and tumble drying will shrink it and stiffen the shell. Spot-clean where you can.
